Prospectors in Nevada have discovered gold near the Carson River valley. This has been the first major U.S. discovery of silver ore. After these recent discoveries, prospectors have rushed in to the area and scrambled to stake their claims. Mining camps begin to thrive in the vicinity, which has become bustling centers of fabulous wealth. The Comstock Lode is a lode of silver ore located under the eastern slope of Mount Davidson, a peak in the Virginia Range in the western Utah Territory. It was the first major discovery of silver ore in the United States. The Comstock Lode has produced thousands and is predicted to make well over $300 million in gold and silver over a twenty‐year period. What got people into mining and how did they discover this? It all began about a decade ago. The discovery of gold in California brought in floods of newcomers into the West. Hundreds of thousands of people from around the world mostly young men, came to California in 1849 in search of instant riches. This led too many other discoveries. The discovery of gold near Pike's Peak in 1859 caused nearly 100,000 miners to go to Colorado. Pike's Peak was the boom in gold prospecting and mining in the pike peaks county of western Kansas territory and southwestern Nebraska territory of the US that began in July 1858, four years ago.
